A wedding in Milan or three months with grandparents in Cologne feels like a family matter, not an immigration one. At the external border it is still a short stay. Relatives do not pause the 90/180 rule, and an invitation letter does not add days. What the letter does is answer the officer’s real questions: why are you coming, where will you sleep, who pays, and when do you leave. This page is the document pack for that conversation — plus the day count people forget because “I’m staying with family.”
Key facts
- Purpose (family) is not a second 90-day allowance.
- Officers may ask for purpose, accommodation, funds, and return travel even if you are visa-exempt.
- Some countries issue official host forms; use those when they exist.
- EU-citizen family rights (free movement) are a different legal track — do not mix them up with a tourist visit to a cousin.
- Living with family while you “sort a permit later” is how visitor days quietly become an overstay.
Two different family situations
Visitor: you are a visa-exempt or Type C traveller staying with relatives. You need a credible visit plan and you must leave within 90 days in 180. This page is for you.
Joining an EU citizen who is exercising free movement, or applying for family reunification: that is residence, not a holiday. Documents, fees and rights differ. See national long-stay visas and that country’s family-reunification pages. Do not treat a visitor entry as a back door into that process unless the country explicitly allows it.
What to carry as a visitor
| Item | Why it is asked | Practical form |
|---|---|---|
| Passport | Identity and remaining validity | Valid at least three months after planned exit, issued within 10 years |
| Host proof | Accommodation and purpose | Official invitation form where required; otherwise a letter, host ID/residence card, address |
| Relationship | That the visit is genuine | Birth or marriage certificate, photos are weak but better than nothing; translations if asked |
| Funds | You will not work or become destitute | Bank statements, host undertaking if they formally sponsor you |
| Return or onward travel | You will leave | Return ticket or a booked onward seat out of Schengen |
| Insurance | Medical costs | Travel medical cover for the whole stay |
| Day count | You are not already at 90 | Your own log / calculator print of remaining days |
Example: Summer with family after a spring city break
You spent 40 days in Spain in April–May. You fly in June to stay 60 days with your sister in Austria. Forty plus 60 is 100. The invitation letter is perfect; the arithmetic is not. Cut the Austria stay or wait until enough April days have aged out. Run the last day in Austria through a Schengen allowance calculator with the Spain trip entered first.
Example: Official host form vs a WhatsApp screenshot
France’s attestation d’accueil and Germany’s Verpflichtungserklärung are issued by the local town hall or foreigners office. They carry more weight than a chat message. If your host lives in a country with such a form and you are likely to be questioned (first visit, one-way ticket, long stay), get the form. A signed letter on paper plus a copy of their passport or residence card is the minimum elsewhere.
ETIAS, EES, and family visits
Once ETIAS is required, family visitors who are visa-exempt still complete it; a relative in Berlin cannot skip it for you. EES will record the entry regardless of whose sofa you use. If a stamp and the EES date diverge, see border stamps vs EES records.
Using the calculator on a family itinerary
“Schengen allowance calculator” and “90 day rule europe calculator” searches are often this: a second family trip in the same 180 days as a holiday. Enter every Schengen stay, including the city break that did not involve family. Set the date you land at the relatives’ airport. If remaining continuous days are shorter than the wedding-plus-new-year plan, shorten the plan — the letter will not stretch the cap.
This is general information, not immigration advice. Official invitation forms and EU-citizen family rights are country-specific. Confirm with that state’s consulate or interior ministry.

Does visiting parents or children in Schengen give me extra days?
Not on a normal visitor stay. Family is the purpose, not a second allowance, unless you have a different status such as family reunification or specific EU-citizen family rights.
Do I need a formal invitation letter?
Not always, but officers can ask for purpose, housing and funds. Use the official host form if the country issues one; otherwise a signed letter plus the host’s ID and address.
Can I stay with family until I apply for residence?
Usually you apply for a long-stay family visa from abroad. Do not assume a visitor entry can be switched in-country.
